How To Make Your Goals Important And Irresistible

The goal setting article below is one I bring out from time to time because I always want to refresh myself on making my goals important and desirable. I always have more fun going after them that way. I hope that you find the repetition beneficial also.

It is a great exercise to get the fires burning again when your motivation falls away, or you start putting important tasks off. I must admit, I work on this one at least once per quarter. (every three months) Some goals where I generate very little interest or sincerity, I will throw out and then I go after the ones that move me emotionally.

For those of you who have never read this article, there is a lot to digest here today, you might want to come back and do the exercise when you have scheduled a block of time.

Sell Yourself, Make Your Goals Important And Irresistible!

When I am discussing goals with people, some just haven’t got the idea. You really need to get leverage on yourself. Working towards what you want can be downright hard work. If you haven’t created the proper mindset, goals will be missed and your self image could take a negative hit.

Your goals should be so exciting and motivating that you almost can’t live without them. Put everything in your favor when setting out for what you want.

So, during the conversation I might spit out, ‘Just SSERC yourself on your goals.’ Yeah, then I usually get the response. “What the heck did you say?” or I get a blank stare. Oh my God, now I’ve put them into a trance.

Well, this acronym stands for a set of terms you can use to sell yourself on the importance of the goals you have commited to.

It is your selling plan, or presentation you will make to yourself to explode you towards what you want. Salespeople do it to you all the time, you might as well take the advantage and consciously sell yourself.

Have you sold yourself on your goals? Do you want them with all your heart? Are you ready to do whatever it takes? Are you really commited to making it happen?

If you are already, then disregard all of the following, and you might as well not read further into this article. There is nothing more for you here. If you aren’t taking the actions necessary to move forward and get what you want, then take a seat and read on.

SSERC stands for a great selling formula.

1. Summarize the situation.
2. State the idea.
3. Explain how it works.
4. Reinforce the key benefits.
5. Close the sale.

OK, let’s start this goal setting exercise. Choose a goal that you haven’t made much progress towards, if any so far.

Remember you are giving this sales presentation to yourself. Put some thought and effort into it. Let each point run smoothly into the next. Don’t prejudge this exercise, this stuff works if you work it!

Summarize the situation.
This is the ‘as is’ situation. Write down what you have now, or what you don’t have now, the good and the bad. I guess that there is really no good or bad, just what is. What you are happy with, and what you are not happy with. Your life as it stands today according to this one goal.

State the idea.
This stands for the particular goal you chose. The main idea that this specific goal represents. What does it mean to you, what’s your real reward for attaining this goal. This is what your idea of the future should be or could be once you have realized this goal and have it in your life. Write it down at this point.

Explain how it works.
This is your plan to attain your goal. What you are willing to do or give in return for getting what you want? What value will you create in return for your goal?

Write it all down in detail, outlining the price you will pay, the effort you will make. Write down what is preventing you from moving forward with it, and how you are going to overcome that.

Remember you are the salesperson selling this idea to yourself. Persist. Don’t take an excuse or a ‘no’ for an answer, press forward with how you are going to enjoy this goal once you have achieved it. Figure out how to make this very important sale!

Document all of the benefits you will receive from attaining this goal. Think deeply about what these would be, really spend some time on this. Write it all down, everything you need to organize to get what you are after.

Reinforce the key benefits.
Now there will usually be one or two overwhelming key benefits you will get from this. Something you care about deeply. If you don’t, then make something up. What could you care about deeply in this situation, if you wanted to care? What are the key benefits you will receive?

How can you make them visually big in your mind? How can you make them stand out above all the other little goals? How can you make this an obsession that you must work toward?

This is also the part where you document the downsides of not assertively and aggressively pursuing your goal. This is where you get to feel the pain and weight of the regret you would feel if you don’t follow through with your action plan.

All the negative experiences which will accrue to you if you let your goal go un-achieved. The pain and sorrow of taking the negative hit on your self image and esteem because you hadn’t the courage to force your way through to completion.

Come on, work with this until you’ve made it absolutely, positively impossible not to act on your plan! You have made yourself an offer you cannot refuse, and you must act on it!

Close the sale.
Make the commitment. Sign on the bottom line. Decide that you will rerun these benefits through your mind until such times as you have in your possession what you want, what you are after.

Now, if you wouldn’t sign an agreement with yourself that would commit you to your course of action, then you haven’t applied enough internal pressure or leverage to make the sale.

Go back to your goals and concentrate on your key benefits and key massive downsides and work yourself into the hungry state necessary to make this happen for you. This is too important not to follow through.

What do you have to say to yourself to persuade yourself to the point where there is no turning back; that you will persevere until you have paid the full asking price?

I know this is a big exercise and it does take some time to complete. For today, just get started. Starting is where all the power is anyway. A job started is a job half done.

Start selling yourself today, and then keep selling yourself until you have what you want. Focus on the benefits. See yourself getting all the goodies, and talk about it all the time!

The people who quit on themselves before they achieved what they had set out to do; lost their focus, turned around and sold themselves on why they can’t or won’t get what they after by going through all the reasons why they shouldn’t succeed.

Stay positive and keep selling those benefits to yourself until you reach your goal . . . And then, go set another really big goal!

Do You Have A High Performance Attitude?

Here’s a great article about positive attitudes and how to develop them. A Positive Attitude is the exponential multiplier of production.

Whether you take productive action or not is usually determined by how you manage your state, how you manage your focus, and in other words, how you look at your world. It is absolutely critical to your success.

Make note of whatever strikes you as you read through and practice your positive outlook. The author has some great info here, and every time I re-read it something else jumps out at me. I hope you enjoy it.

Positive Attitude: How To Have A Positive Attitude In 7 Simple Steps
By Ken Harness

Positive attitude is very important to being successful and happy.

Have you ever looked at people who always seem happy and enjoy life with envy and wish you could be more like them? Have you ever said to yourself “Why is it that they are always so popular and seem to attract everyone to them like a magnet?”

Did you ever stop to think that it might just be their positive attitude and the way they look at – and react to – the world around them?

Thinking and acting with a positive attitude can do more than anything else towards getting you whatever you want out of life, because those who are in positions to make things happen for you will want to be around you, and want to work with you to help make your dreams a reality. Having a positive attitude in whatever you do will make things easier, and even more enjoyable.

Here are seven simple but powerful tips to having a more positive attitude – and thus becoming a more powerful person.

1. Take passionate action towards living your life. Don’t just make it through the day, live it.

Sink your teeth into it and live it like it was your last day on earth. Wring every moment out of it and live each day with passion. Passion and a positive attitude are contagious. You will find others attracted to you who are just as passionate about life and living.

2. Act instead of reacting. Don’t wait until something bad happens then try to deal with it. Be proactive and make something good happen. You are responsible for what you make of the life you have, and you only have one, so don’t waste it. Create the best life you possibly can, one day at a time.

3. Believe that each moment is perfect regardless of its outcome. Bad things happen. That is a fact of life. but that doesn’t mean you have to allow it to drag you down. Good can come from everything, no matter how bad it may be at the time.

Learn to open yourself up to learn from, and gain strength from, the bad things that happen in your life. Learning to have a positive attitude even when bad things are happening will help you to get through the bad times even stronger and more determined to succeed.

4. Learn to always be grateful for what you have. It’s a well-known fact among successful people that having gratitude will get you more than never being satisfied.

There’s nothing wrong with having dreams and goals and desiring more out of life, but don’t forget to be grateful for what you have already.

Those who are never satisfied or grateful with what they have get into a “needy” ot “poverty” mindset, where they think they never have have anything, and are doomed to never having anything.

A positive attitude attracts positive actions. Gratitude attracts positive energy.

5. Seize every opportunity that you can instead of regretting it later. Now, whatever you do, don’t put yourself in the poorhouse or take food out of your childrens’ mouths, chasing every get-rich-quick scheme that comes around the corner.

But don’t be afraid to take opportunities that feel right either. Successful people have taught themselves to have a sixth sense when it comes to taking advantage of new opportunities.

6. Always keep your sense of humor. People like to be around those who find humor in even the most awkward moments. Learn to laugh and you will be more positive, especiall if you can learn to laugh at yourself. Don’t take yourself, or life, too seriously.

Life is much too short to waste it moping around in self pity. Humor is very attractive. A positive attitude can be born from a strong sense of humor.

7. Believe that you are in charge of your destiny. No one can take your dreams from you except for you. As long as there’s still breath in your body, there is no limit to how much can accomplish.

Life is not something that is going on around you. It is what you make of it. And even by doing nothing you are still creating your life, so why not get involved and create a life you want and can enjoy?

Anyone who is truly successful, who enjoys life and has a life to be proud of, has a positive attitude. If you use these seven steps to help you have a positive attitude, then you too will have a life worth living.

Just remember, it all starts with learning to have a positive attitude.

Goal Setting Musts For Goal Achievement

Goal Achievement in a Nutshell? – Just Get Serious.

Get serious about your goal setting plans, strategies, and take serious action. It’s your life and it is NOT infinite, you have a finite time on this planet. Why shouldn’t you absolutely live every minute of it?

Are you serious about getting what you want, or serious about being or doing what you want?

Goal Setting is not brain surgery and it is not complicated. We tend to over complicate simple things. Far too many people are not willing to investigate all their options.

They are not serious about designing their life. They give in to excuses.

In the beginning it probably seemed easier not to go their own way, but this is life’s fatal trap which they most often did not recognize until many years later.

They then finally realized that they could have had whatever they wanted if they just would have started momentum in the direction of their real dream.

They sat back and took a reactive role, let others make the decisions, and then just go along for the ride and hope that everything would work out. They didn’t seem to want to take ownership of their life.

Don’t let this be you. Make your decision up front, and then take the time and actions necessary to plan out your journey. In other words, go make your decision right.

I remember when I was younger and I needed a new car. I would just go into the dealership, or look in the paper for what I thought I could afford, or for what they had available on the lot.

I mean I had a vague idea of what I thought I wanted, but the available money would usually make the final decision for me.

I didn’t realize it at the time but I had literally made an unconscious decision to settle for what I thought I could get at the time. Some of you may relate . . .

I would look over the limited selection and pick out what I thought I wanted, or whatever they were pushing me toward.

What a crock! I pretty much let them make the decision for me and then I justified the decision in my own mind that it was really what I wanted.

And my dream car would just get further away from my reality because I didn’t have the courage to pursue it. My life was pretty much an expanded view of the same type of behaviors.

Now whenever I set a plan into motion I check to make sure I feel certain I am doing the right thing for me.

Here are what I think are the most important rules for achieving anything you want. There are others but I feel these are the most critical areas.

1. You must believe that what you are doing is the most important thing you can do. You must be committed to this path as being the best path for you. No wavering, no conflicting emotions allowed.

2. You must believe that you have now, or you can develop the special qualities that are necessary for accomplishment in this area. Organize the resources necessary for making the journey, and educate yourself as you go.

3. You must desire it with all your heart and recognize that the full and complete success in this undertaking is the only acceptable outcome. It is your want, you deserve it and you refuse to lose.

4. You must see yourself taking the actions necessary and feel the enjoyment accomplishing it will bring. Get comfortable with the realization that you will soon have what you want. You may decide to adjust the timing and strategy, but the goal is a sure thing.

5. You must make a habit of disciplining yourself to make completions. Make sure your subconscious mind and your daily habits serve your master plan. Replace procrastination with the eagerness to move forward. You just can’t wait to make it happen.

Your success rate is hugely dependent on how successful you are at applying this checklist of rules to your goal path.

If you are not serious about your life’s journey, then what will you be serious about? There is no time like the present!

Like I said at the start, Get Serious. It’s your life.

OK. Let’s get started.

Dream Your Life Now, Impossible Is Just A Word

Everyone, at some point of his or her life, has dreamed of being somebody special, somebody big. Who hasn’t fantasized about being the one who hits the game-winning homer? Who hasn’t dreamed of being the homecoming queen?

And how many times have we dreamed of being rich, or successful, or happy with our relationships?

Have you dreamed a big dream?

Often, we do dream the big dreams and have great aspirations. Unfortunately, our dreams tend to remain just that – dreams. And our aspirations can easily collect dust in our attic.

This is a sad turn of events in a life. Instead of experiencing exciting adventures in self actualization, we get caught up in the humdrum of living from day-to-day just barely existing.

But you know what? Life could be so much better, if only we learned to aim higher.

The most common problem to setting goals is the word ‘impossible’. Many people get hung up thinking I can’t do this. It’s too hard. It’s too impossible. No one can do this.

However, if everyone thought that, there would be no inventions, no innovations, and no breakthroughs in human accomplishment.

On the other hand, some people suffer from dreaming totally outrageous dreams and not acting on them. The result? Broken dreams, and tattered aspirations.

If you limit yourself with self-doubt, and self-limiting assumptions, you will never be able to break past what you deem impossible. If you reach too far out into the sky without working towards your goal, you will find yourself clinging to the impossible dream.

Try this exercise.

Take a piece of paper and write down some goals in your life, and separate them into three categories.

Under one header, list down things ‘you know you can do’.

Under another header, write the things ‘you might be able to do.’

And under one more, list the things that that are ‘impossible for you to do.’

Now look at all the headers every day, but strive to accomplish only the goals that are under things ‘you know you can do’. Check them off when you accomplish them.

As you slowly check all of your goals under that heading, then try accomplishing the goals under the other header – the one that reads ‘you might be able to do.’

As the items you wrote under things I could do are accomplished, you can move the goals that are under things that are ‘impossible for you to do’ to the list of things ‘you might be able to do.’

As you iterate through this process, you will find out that the goals you thought were impossible become easier to accomplish. And . . . the impossible begin to seem possible after all.

You see, the technique here is not to limit your imagination. It is to aim high, and start working towards that goal little by little. However, it is unwise to set a goal that is truly unrealistic with your present belief system.

Those who just dream towards a goal without working hard to achieve it, end up disappointed and disillusioned.

On the other hand, if you told someone a hundred years ago that it was possible for man to be on the moon, they would laugh at you. If you had told them that you could send mail from here to the other side of the world in a few seconds, they would say you were out of your mind.

But, through sheer desire and perseverance, these impossible dreams are now realities.

Thomas Edison once said that genius is 1% inspiration and 99% perspiration. Nothing could be truer. For one to accomplish his or her dreams, there has to be had work and discipline. But take note that the 1% has to be a think-big dream, and not some easily accomplished one.

Ask any gym rat and he or she will tell you that there can be no gains unless you are put out of your comfort zone. Remember the saying, “No pain, no gain”? That is as true as it can be.

So dream on, friend! Dream The Big Dream! Don’t get caught up in your perceived limitations. Think big and work hard to attain those dreams.

As you step up the ladder of progress, you will find out that the impossible has just become a little bit more possible.

What You Think About You Bring About

A little while ago I posted a link to Lynn Terry’s SSWT website where you could pick up a FREE copy of a Think And Grow Rich PDF Ebook, no strings attached.

By the way if you haven’t read the book “Think And Grow Rich” by Napoleon Hill yet, you are missing out on some of the finest self help information available, bar none, and it’s FREE.

Napoleon was very big on “Thoughts Are Things” which today’s article explains in great detail. So I post this article as a follow up, to stress how important it is that we remain focused on what we want, and not on what we don’t want.

Here is Chuck’s article:

What You Think About, You Bring About

Nearly every day I hear someone say something along the lines of “Why does life have to be so hard” or “Why can’t I ever get a break?” and sometimes even “Why does everything happen to me?”

It seems that the majority of people in our world these days seem to struggle from day to day in one area or another in their lives.

Most believe that they are just a victim of circumstance and that they have no control over these seeming difficult situations. The majority believe that it is simply by fate or chance that they must endure these unpleasant and uncomfortable situations and circumstances, and that there is absolutely nothing that they are capable of doing that will change them.

This reasoning, as legitimate as it may seem, couldn’t be further from the truth.

The fact is that whatever may be happening in ones life is happening because that is exactly what the individual is causing to happen on either a conscious or subconscious level.

Sound crazy? Many think it does, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t the truth. It is the absolute truth.

Everything that manifests in our world must begin as a seed whether it be humans, plants, animals, illness, or disease. It is absolutely impossible for anything in the universe to exist without starting from something.

So what does that have to do with your thoughts, whether they be conscious or subconscious? Allow me to explain. The human mind is made up of two components. The conscious mind and the subconscious mind.

Your conscious mind is the rational portion of your mind and it establishes it’s beliefs based on the 5 physical senses of hearing, sight, smell, taste and touch. The information that is gained from these senses is sent to the brain, which is the physical tool of the mind, and then combined with an emotion which in turn establishes a belief.

Each and every belief you currently have or that you have held in the past, concerning anything, at one point was established through your conscious thought process and has been stored in your subconscious mind as fact.

When the rational conscious mind comes upon any situation, it accesses the data storehouse of the subconscious to assist it in making a determination regarding an event, situation or circumstance, that it previously stored there, and makes a choice as to how it will react to the circumstance based on that information.

The subconscious cannot differentiate between what is true or false, good or bad, right or wrong. It has no reasoning ability whatsoever. It has no way of knowing what the conscious is giving to it.

The only function of the subconscious is:

#1) Accepting and storing whatever data has been sent to it, whether it be true or false, by the rational thinking conscious mind.

#2) Going to work to manifest the data that it was given, and bring it into physical being through the law of attraction.

Each thought that is created and each belief that is established acts as the seed. If the thing that you want creates conflict in your subconscious based on an old belief, negative energy is created and the seed can only produce negative results.

If the conscious and subconscious are in harmony regarding the thing wanted, positive energy is created and only positive things can be produced.

When a firm belief is established at some point in life (usually in the childhood years) and then later in life that belief is challenged, it creates conflict, between the conscious and the subconscious which in turn creates negative energy which then attracts additional negative energy to it, and actually creates those very things that you consciously claim that you don’t want to happen.

In other words, if you consciously want something, whether it be money, relationships, etc. and aren’t receiving it, you have a subconscious belief that is contrary to what you consciously claim that you want and it is that belief that is keeping whatever it is from being realized in the physical world, and in many cases creating exactly the opposite of what it is that you want.

Although this isn’t knowledge that is held and accepted by the majority, it has been scientifically proven through quantum physics and has actually been known and shared by spiritual teachers for thousands of years. What many used to call unprovable nonsense is now actually being discovered and proven by modern day science.

So how can you overcome this conflict and begin producing only the desired results?

By releasing the old negative emotions that have been stored in the subconscious and guarding what you allow to be stored in it in the future.

Become conscious of what you allow the subconscious to absorb and begin the habit of feeding it only the information that will serve your needs.

Begin each day by absorbing some positive information from some source and eliminate the constant negativity that is continually shared through people, TV, newspapers, etc.

It is this constant bombardment of negativity that plays a huge role in shaping your thoughts, both conscious and subconscious, and it is those thoughts that determine your life.

Have Confidence, Turn Failure Into Success

Not posting much tonight . . .

Since we were talking about how to turn failure into success previously, I thought I would point you over to a post on Jim Estill’s CEO Blog Time Leadership.

Jim being A CEO of a large corporation, there is a lot I can learn from him. Here is an excerpt from his post today just to let you see how certain attitudes shape your decision making.

Dealing With Failure – by Jim Estill

Failure is a success if we learn from it. – Malcolm Forbes

In a recent interview, I was asked what my biggest failure was. Interesting, I could not come up with just one. I believe one of my biggest reasons for success is that I fail more often than most people.

It goes with my “Fail often, fail fast, fail cheap”.

It goes with “you only fail from not trying – not from trying”.

And having a failure, does not make you a failure . . .

Now . . . if the CEO of a major corporation can say that he fails from time to time, then what excuse do I have? Check out the rest of Jim’s Blog post at: Dealing With Failure

Now it is easy to see that Jim’s confidence levels are pretty high in his competence to persist, enough so that a “failure”, is not allowed to affect his self esteem at it’s basic level.

Another post today over at Dave Navarro’s Million Dollar Leverage Blog about Self Confidence and how it can change for you instantly, rather than take a long time, just by changing your focus.

Check out Dave’s Blog post: How I Boosted My Confidence . . .

I think that we must have confidence in ourselves and realize that failure is just part of the trip, not the destination. It is the goal that is our destination, and we can achieve it by allowing ourself to see past the failures.

I have always been one for enjoying the journey as well as the destination, but sometimes we just have to Focus on the prize, not the process . . .

Goal Setting – Clarification Is Key!

Today’s article actually reminded me of a time when I felt like goal setting just wasn’t all it was cracked up to be. At the time I thought I was setting goals the right way but success just wasn’t coming like I wanted.

The truth was that I was trying to cheat the system by writing out my goals, and making them look great on paper, instead of planning my next move necessary.

I lacked clarity, big time.

The challenge was I felt it was too time consuming to actually divide them down to the simplest action to take next, and I failed often and quit more than a few times.

I frequently stalled out and many times felt overwhelmed by the size of my goals and belief and motivation waivered like a reed in the wind. I would like to do this and that but I just couldn’t find the time or I didn’t know what to do next . . . (did you ever feel this way?)

By not taking the time to clarify exactly what I wanted to end up with and why, I was in fact guaranteeing my failure in each enterprise.

So, I guess the moral of this story is this:

If you are not willing to take the time to get clear on what your goal is, or take the time to plan exactly how you can accomplish it, then my guess is that the goal is the wrong goal for you.

You must get absolutely clear. You must be motivated enough to split your goals into the smallest pieces possible and start right there, right now. If not, then revisit your goals and check to see if they are indeed yours or what someone else thinks you should go for.

Jeesh, I have been rambling on. Here’s Susan.

Explicit Goals, Surefire Results

Regardless of what you want to achieve, the surest way to get there is to begin with sharply honed goals. Here’s why, and how to craft them.

The biggest benefit of chiseling a detailed description of what you want to do is that, even without your conscious attention, your mind will begin planning. Programming a specific target into your brain ignites its launch sequence.

It calculates the trajectory it will need to take, the resources it will need to tap, the type of energy the task will require, and the speed it will need to generate to get the job done. It sets itself up to perform so that it can fly as soon as you signal it that you’re ready.

By identifying exactly what you want to do and what result you want to generate, you also stimulate your brain to play with alternative strategies and to rehearse the most effective ones in advance of your taking action.

Your imagination will quietly attend to your goal while you are engaged in other activities. Even when you’re asleep, as long as your subconscious knows that you intend to take action on your goal, it will be preparing to support your efforts.

Finally, because it has been programmed to concentrate on a clear-cut target, once you begin to act on your goal, your brain will filter out irrelevant noise, allowing you to focus with fewer distractions and act with greater definiteness of purpose.

To achieve a crystal-clear definition of your goal, begin by simplifying it as much as possible. If it’s a complex or multi-faceted goal, break it down into a sequence of simple ones.

For example, instead of saying “I’m going to study tonight,” decide that “I’m going to finish chapter six of my biology text and do the exercises; then I’ll read the English assignment.”

Instead of saying “I’m going to be debt-free,” develop a plan for eliminating your each of your debts in a specific order.

If at all possible, quantify your target in some way: How much? How many? How often? How long? How far? Finding some way to add a numerical value to your goal is one of the best ways to make it precise.

Avoid descriptions like “some” or “a few” or “a little while.” Eliminate any ambiguities that you can.

Then identify the additional qualities of your goal: its color, texture, function, size, condition, uniqueness, age, material composition, intended audience, style, or purpose. Even though you have simplified it, detail as many things about your goal as you can.

Does it have time or cost constraints? Does it need to produce an emotional or intellectual impact of some kind? Are environmental concerns a factor?

Feeding your brain this kind of detailed data generates enormous focus and creativity. The subconscious works with images and the more concrete they are, the more effective it can be in lining up the factors that will contribute to your ultimate success.

The small amount of time and effort you invest in clarifying your goal does more than give you an edge. It repays you tremendously in increased efficiency, effectiveness and spectacular results.

Fear Of Failure? Process It. Get Rid Of It!

I just read a great quote and thought that this one quote was worth it’s very own post:

Here it is from Michael Jordan, one of the greatest players ever to hit the basketball courts. Talk about success traits and keys. This is one very big part of the puzzle.

I have missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I have lost almost 300 games. On 26 occasions I have been entrusted to take the game winning shot . . . and missed. And I have failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why . . . I succeed.” — Michael Jordan

Now that gives a whole new meaning to this thought:

If at first you don’t succeed, then try, try again. Persist until you have what you want. Short, sweet, and tremendously effective.

Here’s hoping you fail a lot. Fail all the way to your success. :-) Have a great weekend.

Goal Setters, Roadblocks Are Normal . . .

This is one of my favorite articles to read when I need some lifting up . . . from Steve Pavlina. It’s all in the way you look at things. And, it follows the theme from yesterday’s article posted about Persistence and Commitment.

Show Me Your Battle Scars

Whenever you set an ambitious goal, it’s virtually guaranteed you’ll encounter some roadblocks.

There’s no reason to let that stop you though. A roadblock isn’t much of an obstacle for a human being. You can climb over it, walk around it, blow it up, get someone else to move it, or otherwise bypass it.

Roadblocks do an outstanding job of frightening away the timid. But to those with a modicum of courage, roadblocks have very little power. When a committed person tackles a roadblock, the roadblock stands very little chance.

After a little time spent hacking away at the roadblock, the universe will tend to do the equivalent of saying, “Well, alright then… I was just checking to see if you were serious. I won’t stand in your way anymore. You’re free to proceed.”

Perhaps it’s a universal safety mechanism, something along the lines of survival of the fittest. Maybe the universe won’t allow weak-minded people to go too far down the path of goal achievement, since if they were to succeed in a big way, they’d just make a real mess of things.

Strong-willed people are free to pass, while weak-minded ones get knocked back and have to train up a bit more.

Time for a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson:

“When a resolute young fellow steps up to the great bully, the world, and takes him boldly by the beard, he is often surprised to find it comes off in his hand, and that it was only tied on to scare away the timid adventurers.”

So the question is… are you a timid adventurer? Has the world been scaring you away from setting and achieving some really big and meaningful goals?

Is a scarecrow enough to derail you from getting what you really want? Have you been derailed so many times that you’ve stopped pursuing what you want and settled for what you think you can get?

Have you defined as “impossible” or “highly improbable” a whole host of possibilities that other human beings have already proven achievable?

Sure there are some goals that would be really tough for you to accomplish. Maybe you’re right about certain things being impossible for you. So let’s see your battle scars then. Show me the wounds you’ve endured as a result of pursuing goals you couldn’t achieve.

Let’s see that bankruptcy, that broken heart, the rejection letter, the lawsuit, the divorce, the public humiliation. Show me the total failures, the brutal disappointments, the smack-downs.

Let’s see them battle scars.

What’s that? Do my ears deceive me, or are those crickets I’m hearing?

No scars, eh.

Alrighty, how about some cuts and bruises? … A skinned knee? … A boo boo? … Heck, I’ll settle for a henna tattoo at this point.

If you have no scars, then you’re a super-duper mega-achiever, right? You must either be a complete genius or incredibly lucky. Nothing but a huge string of successes one after the other.

That’s not it either?

But if you’re not experiencing unfathomable successes and you’re not taking heavy damage either, then what the heck have you been doing with yourself?

Playing it safe, eh? Playing… Pretending…

Did you really come here to live a pretend life? Perhaps you should stop doing that.

Think about living a real life for a change… the kind of life people write poetry about.

If this world were a role-playing game (RPG), would you be classified as an Avatar or an NPC (non-player character)? NPCs sit around and repeat the same actions day after day. Avatars go on quests, where every day is different.

Do you have a quest? Or just a queue? Those last couple letters make a big difference.

Is your life safe? The word safe is both an adjective and a noun. As an adjective it means “being free from danger.” As a noun it’s “an enclosed storage container with a lock on it.” If you’re living the adjective, you’re living the noun too.

The word brave is also an adjective and a noun, meaning “possessing courage” (adj) and “a warrior” (n). Same rules apply.

Put an ending to pretending. Design your character, train him up, buy him some cool weapons, and send him into battle. Leave the safe behind — it will only slow you down.

In other words, decide what you want, develop the required skills, acquire the necessary resources, and go after your goal with courage. Don’t let anyone or anything stand in your way. Be that resolute young fellow (regardless of your age) as opposed to the timid adventurer.

It really is true that you have nothing to fear but fear itself. If you get hurt along the way, then suck it up and keep going. Battle scars are a part of life. To deny yourself disppointment is to deny yourself victory.

If you want to go on a meaningful quest, you’re going to have to risk losing some hit points now and then. Imagine playing an RPG without losing any hit points. You’d be playing scared, and it would be mind-numbingly dull and plodding. Is that how you’re playing the game of life right now?

Is your life full of ghastly defeats and glorious triumphs? Or has getting the mail become the highlight of your day?

Do something today that causes you to risk outright failure. Polish that old armor, and clean up those rusty weapons. Put some of those hit points to good use for a change.

If you fail, then nurse your wounds and celebrate that you’re finally living as human beings were meant to live — impassioned, emboldened, and completely unafraid.

But if you succeed, go find yourself a darn good poet.
