Goal Setting Software, Are You Ready For Serious Goal Setting

Goal Setting Software – Advantages and Disadvantages By Brian Mc Shane

In today’s high speed and high tech society, it appears that there is software being developed to do almost every task imaginable. We are constantly on the lookout for software which helps us carry out repetitive or time consuming tasks more efficiently.

Goal setting software is just one of those which have become a lot more popular in recent years and will continue to do so.

All types of software if used correctly should make life easier for the user. After all the very purpose of creating the software in the first place is (hopefully) to help you achieve an objective quicker and more consistently than you would have otherwise done manually.

Goal setting software offers goal setters a central location on which to record all goal setting tasks, whilst at the same time delivering an accurate feedback and monitoring process.

For instance most goal setting software will help guide the user step by step through the goal setting process and will more than likely include a system which prohibits the user from skipping necessary exercises or activities.

They allow you to keep all your goalĀ  related activities, documentation and findings in one place, without the need for huge piles of hand written notes, lists and exercises.

A good piece of goal setting software should act as your personal organiser, your to do list, and your personal journal.

In my opinion the key advantage to using goal software is the fact that you can keep everything in the one place, where it is organised and categorised correctly at all times.

Most goal setting software is extremely intuitive to use and if you are familiar with using modern software packages such as Microsoft word and excel, you will have no problem quickly becoming proficient in using it.

However now comes the downside…are you ready for the revelation?

Goal setting software WON’T make you a better goal setter!

It may make you a more organised goal setter, even a more focused goal setter, but it WON’T help you achieve your goals any quicker.

That’s just the simple truth.

It is a tool and just like any other tool, the results you obtain from using it will be determined by your determination, skills and hard work. This is why so many people try goal software and are then disappointed by the results.

“It doesn’t work” they cry!, and then they move onto the next “latest and greatest” software.

This is as preposterous as a wannabe artist throwing away a particular brush as it didn’t make him a better artist, or a wannabe chef complaining that his pots and pans hadn’t helped him become a world class chef.

Goal software can be a remarkable tool and a tremendously powerful one, however only if used in conjunction with self discipline and will power.

You MUST however develop the habits, actions, behaviour and mindset of a successful person first. If you don’t do this, you will find that no goal setting software on the planet will help you!

So before you run to order your software, sit down and establish if you are taking action on the basics, if not then you should delay your purchase until you feel you have the relevant mindset and success habits

I wholeheartedly agree with your much toned appraisal with goal setting software. Much like some people that use GTD tools having never read D. Allen’s book, these are just tools.

However I must stress that the makers of such software should remind us of the basics (or even force us) by a carefully crafted goal setting process. Even those that have good goal setting skills might sometimes have a lapse in judgment and need a nudge in the right direction.

I do believe however, that software has many unique features beyond just a central repository, as is stated in the article. Some of these might include:
    - automated reminders
    - motivational quotes, sent on random times and dates to motivate in the moment
    - a game layer might be built to make this process more fun
    - sharing goals with others whether they be bystanders or personal coaches

I have not yet however any software that comes close to these, but hey goal setting is a skill for life so it’s worth the time to research.
